Shohei Ohtani Becomes First Angel To Have 40/20 Season

Aug 30, 2021 12:22 PM

Two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani reached yet another incredible milestone on Saturday night, as he became the first Angels player to ever hit at least 40 homers and steal 20 bases in a season.

Ohtani reached the mark with his 20th stolen base of 2021, coming in the fifth inning of a 10-2 win over the Padres at Angel Stadium. Ohtani already had reached the 40-homer mark -- he leads the Majors with 41 blasts this year. And it doesn’t include the fact that he’s also 8-1 with a 3.00 ERA and 127 strikeouts in 105 innings as a pitcher this season.

His dad reminded him that his grandma, Margaret Peterson, would have wanted to see him out there.

"I think that kind of locked me in," Belt said.

Belt swung a heavy bat with a heavy heart, hitting two of San Francisco's four home runs before dedicating them and the rest of his season to his grandmother's memory following the Giants' 8-0 win over the Mets.

He did so by blanking a star-studded San Diego Padres lineup, writing one of the most improbable sports stories of 2021.

Gilbert, 27, became the fourth pitcher in baseball history to throw a no-hitter in his first big league start.

"Amazing," Gilbert, speaking after a 7-0 victory from Chase Field, said with a smile. "It hasn't hit me too much yet, but it's really cool."
